Yantras are sacred geometric forms which are said to contain and embody the energy of their subjects. They are beautiful, powerful, and, most importantly, practical. They can be used in the home as art or to change the energy of a space. Yantras are valuable tools for meditation and can facilitate movement into those last three limbs of yoga, namely dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.
Many yantras are associated with deities from the Hindu pantheon. These gods and goddesses are not considered in the same way as “God” in the monotheistic traditions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. They are representations of particular types of energy that exist within and around all of us. We encounter these energies every day in different ways, and a yantra can be used to invoke and encourage a certain energy in our life. For example, Ganesh represents the energy that removes obstacles from our path. Lakshmi is the energy of luck that places just what we need before us at just the right moment. Shiva is the energy that breaks things down, destroying them to make space for any new things that will serve us. By welcoming a yantra into your home you can strengthen the power of your intention and bring your practice to a new and deeper level.
